TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 1:

SACRED VALLEY SUPER TOUR WITH MARAS MORAY

Your tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas ( Vip ) begins at 7:00 am when your guide will pick you up from your hotel lobby.

We will begin by visiting the picturesque town of Chinchero, known as the city of the rainbow, to see the Church of Nuestra Señora de Monserrat built in 1607 on the palace of Tupac Yupanqui, we will also see Inka platforms and its craft market. We will continue our tour visiting the town of Maras and the Moray agricultural experimentation platforms. It is believed that in this fascinating area, the Incas created their own microclimate to adapt plants, flowers and many other products from different parts of the Inca empire. After this we will visit the salt mines “salineras ” located just below Maras. These mines continue to work and the peasants work in them during the day, at the end and back to our private transport, then we will go to the town of Urubamba where we will enjoy the buffet lunch that will allow you to enjoy the delicious Peruvian cuisine, in the afternoon. We will visit the Ollantaytambo Fortress, which was a strategic military, agricultural and religious center to administer and control the Sacred Valley of the Incas; This is deduced from the constructions that are presumed for agricultural deposits and for military use, such as walls and watchtowers (probably to protect themselves from the jungle ethnic groups). This archaeological site comprises a series of superimposed platforms, showing the impressive and large stone blocks finely carved and located on the upper terrace and as a last point we will visit the city of Pisac, this impressive place will give you an idea of the advanced knowledge that the ancients reached. Incas in architecture. As in other Inca constructions, some studies reveal that it was not a fortress, but a kind of “royal hacienda”, owned by the Inca Pachacútec, made up of platforms, domestic and ceremonial structures, and aqueducts that supplied water for the agro-industrial operation. Another good reason to visit Pisac is its artisan market, where you can find some unique and authentic souvenirs.

CHINCHERO: This town is located 28 km from Cusco on the paved road to Urubamba. Where the remains of what was the royal hacienda of Túpac Inca Yupanqui are located ” , it is like a beautiful colonial temple built on Inca foundations, its greatest attraction. However, it is about its artisan market, originally dedicated to the exchange of agricultural products between the locals of the valley and those of the highlands. Currently, the market is a true spectacle of color and movement that fascinates tourists with its offer of handicrafts and textiles made in the purest pre-Columbian style.

MORAY: It is located 7 km. de Maras, 1 hour from the city of Cusco by the Chinchero route, is one of the most spectacular visits where there are circular platforms of different sizes. They are terraces for agricultural experimentation and places of concentration of feminine energy, which is why it is considered a magnetic center of the Pachamama.

MARAS – SALT MINES: Located northwest of the town of Maras Known by some as “salt mines” they are made up of around 3000 small wells. Salt has been obtained since pre-Hispanic times through a sun-drying system of salt water that comes from an underground stream. Once the water has evaporated, the salt is ready for sale.

URUBAMBA: A great place with Inca productions, mainly corn, and today a beautiful field, with great fruit production. An excellent place to enjoy our typical buffet lunch in the area.

OLLANTAYTAMBO: Typical Inca town located 21 km from Urubamba (2800 masl) . it was named in honor of the cacique Ollantay, famous for his romance with an Inca princess, daughter of Pachacutec , important Inca construction zone, built during the heyday of the Incas, Ollantaytambo Fortress that constituted a strategic military, agricultural and religious center to administer and control. the Sacred Valley of the Incas; This can be deduced from the constructions that were presumably for agricultural warehouses and for military use such as walls and watchtowers (probably to protect themselves from the jungle ethnic groups). This archaeological site comprises a series of superimposed terraces, showing the impressive and finely carved large stone blocks located on the upper terrace, where descendants of the Incas still live in the Inca houses .

PISAC: Pisaq is located 33 km from Cusco by paved road (from the Sacred Valley of the Incas). It has an old town, an archaeological site considered among the most important in Cusco, and a modern town, of colonial origin. This place also has a very famous Pisac handicraft market that attracts thousands of visitors and residents of remote towns, wearing colorful traditional clothing. Here it is recommended to buy all the handicrafts, since these are cheaper than in the city of Cusco.

Recommendations

You must acclimatize correctly

To acclimatize yourself correctly, it is necessary to spend a few days in the city of Cusco or in another high altitude location before starting the hike or adventure you want to do. Acclimatization helps your body gradually adapt to the lower concentration of oxygen in the air that exists in high-altitude cities, thus reducing the risk of altitude sickness. Use these days to explore Cusco and enjoy the local culture and allow your body to adjust to the change in altitude more comfortably.

Physical preparation for walks in Cusco

The hikes we offer can be somewhat difficult, but this is more due to the altitude. Before the walk you can do regular exercises to strengthen your legs and improve your resistance, all of this to prepare your muscles for the effort. This will allow you to enjoy the ride more and reduce the risk of muscle fatigue.

Pack your backpack rationally

For your hikes you should include only the essentials: such as a good quality backpack, comfortable hiking boots (remember to wear shoes that you have used before, do not wear new shoes, as these have not yet adapted to your feet), warm clothing ( as temperatures can drop at night), rain gear and a sleeping bag suitable for cold temperatures.

Make sure you only carry the essentials to keep your backpack light and comfortable throughout the hike.

Water and snacks for the walk

Bring a refillable water bottle and snacks to stay hydrated and energized during the hike. Also, be sure to bring enough water for the day and take advantage of opportunities along the trail to refill your bottle. Energy snacks, such as dried fruit and granola bars, will provide you with the energy you need to maintain a good pace.

Travel with a travel agency or independently

Decide if you prefer to do the walk independently or with a guided tour with our travel agency. While doing it independently gives you more flexibility, a guided tour provides logistical support, transportation, and often includes meals. A guide can also enrich your experience by providing information about local history and culture. Also remember that many of our routes are several days long, with changing climates, constant ascents and descents; Traveling with heavy luggage on your back is exhausting and dangerous for the body; At “Xpedition Trek” we do not want you to take risks of any kind, although it is true that there are routes that you can do on your own; There are others that we do not recommend you go alone.
We provide you with all the necessary logistics to make your hike as pleasant as possible.

What you should consider for the climate

In Cusco, the walks and Tours are done in different climates and altitude conditions, so it is necessary to adapt to each of the conditions; Before taking these tours, always ask us about the specific weather of the tour you will do. In addition to warm clothing, bring a waterproof jacket and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Check weather forecasts before you leave and adjust your luggage accordingly.

Permits and Entry Tickets

Many tourist sites in Cusco require special permits, and involve a cost; Check whether permits are required for the hike or tour you are taking in advance, especially if you plan to go during peak season. This will guarantee your place on the route and allow you to avoid possible logistical setbacks.

Prevention of altitude sickness:

Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and consider using medication to prevent altitude sickness. Consult a health professional before taking any medication. Additionally, walk at a steady pace and allow your body to gradually adapt to the altitude to minimize the symptoms of altitude sickness.

Enjoy the landscape

Take time to appreciate the stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and cultural sites along the way. The Salkantay Route offers impressive views of the Andes. Don’t rush and take advantage of every moment to absorb the natural beauty that surrounds you. Consider bringing a camera to capture unforgettable memories of your adventure.
